This project builds on the Poverty and Conflict research in DRC, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. It looks specifically at political rhetoric and promises made within armed groups around peace processes. We seek to understand how ceasefires, disarmaments, and demobilisation are negotiated and communicated inside armed groups. How do elite pacts trickle down to become material and political promises made to fighters? What happens when these promises are not upheld, or when rumours and scarce resources exacerbate tensions?
